The Sanzan period ( Japanese 三 山 時代 , Sanzan-jidai , dt. "Time of the three mountains") is a historical period on the Ryūkyū Islands , in which the first kingdoms on the main island of Okinawa were able to establish themselves. Today it is dated between around 1314 and 1429.

Since the beginning of the 13th century, individual tribal princes began to expand their power on Okinawa and to consolidate it by building extensive fortifications, the so-called Gusuku . At the beginning of the 14th century, three central kingdoms were formed on the island from the individual tribal principalities : Hokuzan ( ," northern mountain ") in the north, Chūzan ( 中山 ," central mountain ") in the center and Nanzan ( 南山 ," southern Berg “) in the south. The name of time as the time of the three mountains was derived from the names of these three kingdoms . The three kingdoms existed for about 100 years before the ruler of Chūzan, Shō Hashi , first conquered Hokuzan in 1416 and finally Nanzan in 1429 and declared himself the first king of the Ryūkyū kingdom .
