Saprovor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saprovor (Gr. Σαπρός [sapros] "lazy, rotten") are organisms that feed on dead organic material ( detritus ). The best known example of this are a large number of types of mushrooms ( Fungi ).

Saprovores are destructors , i.e. H. Decomposer . Saprovor living animals, fungi and bacteria make life on earth possible because without them the available nutrients would run out over time. They ensure that the nutrients in dead material can be made accessible again to the soil in order to serve as nutrients for plants and animals again.

In the past, some plants were also referred to as saprophytes, but this is outdated as they live autotrophically and not saprobiotically.
