geography

Saragosa is located in west Texas on State Highway 17 and Farm Road 1215 about two miles north of Interstate Highway 10 in the southeastern part of Reeves County. The place is close to Toya Creek 916 meters above sea level.

history

The history of the place begins in 1880 with the settlement of 15 families at Toya Creek, about six kilometers from the location of today's place. A horse breeding business was founded a short time later. Already in 1884 the place received a post office, which was closed again in 1891, a hotel, a restaurant and a saloon were built. Around 1900 Saragosa again had a post office and a school built on the site where it is today. In the early 1900s, Saragosa supplied three surrounding school districts. In 1911 the school was connected to the Pecos Valley Southern Railway, and the site moved to its current location.

In 1925 Saragosa had 25 inhabitants, with the population briefly increasing to 150 around 1930, but falling back to 25 in the course of the 1930s. At that time there were six shops in the village to supply the surrounding livestock farms. In the 1940s and 1950s the population increased significantly, around 1960 the place had 380 inhabitants and twelve shops. In the 1960s, the place increasingly lost its importance as a local supply center, and since 1970 the population has stagnated around 180.

On the night of May 22, 1987, a tornado devastated Saragosa, 30 of the 183 residents were killed, 121 other residents were injured, some seriously, and 85% of the town's buildings were completely destroyed. At the beginning of the 1990s Saragosa was rebuilt, the population was 185 in 1990.
