Sarumaru no Taifu

Sarumaru no Taifu ( Japanese 猿 丸 大夫 , also Sarumaru no Dayū ; dates unknown) was a Waka poet of the early Heian period . Sarumaru is the actual name, Daiyū also Tayū denotes the fifth court rank according to the Ritsuryō system or the fifth rank of a Shinto priest at the Ise shrine . He is one of the 36 immortals in poetry .

Little is known about the historical person Sarumaru and his life dates. Some researchers even doubt its existence. Others argue that Sarumaru is Prince Yamashiro no Ōe . The only mention of Sarumaru is found in the Six Empire Annals .

紅葉 ふ み わ け
な く 鹿 の こ ゑ き く 時 時 ぞ
秋 は か な し き

oku yama ni
momiji fumiwake
nakushika no kowe kiku toki zo
aki ha kanashiki

When in the forest deep and red
I hear the plaintive cries of deer,
as, wandering, on the leaves they tread,
then autumn seems indeed so drear.
