Satellite (chromosome)

The term should not be confused with satellite DNA .

In genetics and cytology , the term satellite describes the end section on the short leg of a chromosome , which is separated from the rest of the chromosome by a secondary constriction point. They are also known as SAT chromosomes. In the case of a condensed chromosome, in addition to the primary constriction on the centromere, there is another constriction behind which visible DNA is attached like a satellite.

The constrictions that make up the satellite may contain ribosomal DNA and are known as the nucleolus organizer region (NOR).
