Satmode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SATMODE , an acronym from satellite - Modem is a back channel service of SES Astra .

With the service presented at the beginning of 2003, a permanent connection to the Astra 1H satellite can be maintained. The project has received financial support from ESA since 2003. The Ka-band is used for the satellite return channel. With Satmode, interactive television should be able to be used as a return channel even without a conventional Internet connection. The data is then transmitted to the set-top box in the DVB-S transponder signal for MHP services and used from there. The return channel is then transmitted back to the satellite via the LNB, which is specially designed for Satmode, via the satellite dish and from there to the SES-Astra ground station and processed. This method is particularly interesting for television advertising, which can then point out references to further offers via Satmode in its commercials and can forward these specifically to the customer. Remote surveys ( TEDs ) could also be carried out.

A commercial launch and price of interactive television services like Satmode has not yet been announced and television stations have not yet announced their support. However, the same technology is used for the 2-way satellite internet service Astra2Connect (now SES Broadband), which started in 2007 on the Astra satellite position 23.5 ° East and runs in both directions via the Ku band .
