Sawi

The Sawi (also Sawuy ) are a Papuan tribe in western New Guinea , Indonesia .

Until the 1960s, the Sawi lived as cannibal headhunters and without contact with civilization . In 1962, the missionary couple Don and Carol Richardson joined this tribe and lived with them for 15 years. The experiences are recorded in Don Richardson's book Peace Child . Since then, many tribespeople have converted to Christianity , with animistic , spiritual ideas predominating.

The Sawi language belongs to the main branch of Trans New Guinea (TNG) and belongs to the Awyu – Dumut family of languages ​​spoken in the (south) eastern regions of Western New Guinea.
