Scenic Drive
In the USA , Canada and Australia , a scenic drive or scenic byway is a route worth seeing, a scenic route or a picturesque road that is often laid out as a circuit. Almost every national park , many other scenic areas and cities have signposted scenic drives or byways. These routes are always accessible with a car , but mostly also with other vehicles such as mobile homes . They lead past the most important sights of the area, so that they can be visited without planning an individual route. The length of these tourist roads is very different and ranges from a few kilometers to extended tours, for which several days are needed for extensive sightseeing. Some of the roads are chargeable, especially within national parks.
In the US, the US Department of Transportation has a program that recognizes roads of outstanding importance as National Scenic Byways and a smaller selection as All-American Roads . The maintenance and tourism marketing of these roads is financially supported by the ministry. The US Department of Agriculture ( National Forest Scenic Byways , also known as USDA Forest Service Byways ) and most states operate similar programs .
