The pumping station near Prester is a listed building belonging to the Buckau waterworks on the Elbe in Magdeburg in the Prester district .

Architecture and history

The pumping station was built in 1905 on the east bank of the Elbe. The brick tower on the west side of the building, which is crowned with battlements, is striking . Up until the construction of this building, popularly also known as the Mouse Tower , the Buckau waterworks located opposite on the west side of the Elbe had also taken the Elbe water required as drinking water for the city of Magdeburg from the west bank. Because of the deteriorating water quality of the Elbe water, the water was then taken from the east side from 1905. The water quality on the right bank of the Elbe turned out to be better. The water there was cleaner and less salty. The main reason was that the sewage of on the Saale located potash plants with the hall on the left side in the same resulted. In order to transport the water from the pumping station on the right to the waterworks on the left, a culvert pipe with a diameter of one meter was laid under the Elbe.

Due to the deteriorating water quality, the water taken from the Elbe was no longer used as drinking water from 1963, but only as process water for industrial purposes. As early as 1932, a significant proportion of Magdeburg's drinking water had been brought in from the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide north of Magdeburg . Due to the considerable decline in industrial production in Magdeburg after the political change in 1989 , the demand for process water fell considerably. In October 1990 the Buckau waterworks was shut down.

Around 2010 the pumping station was badly damaged in a fire.
