history
Bishop Matthäus Schiner and the Valais district administrator decided in 1501 to better equip their soldiers and bought weapons and ammunition. In order to practice the regular use and handling of weapons, the district administrator decided in December 1545 in all Zenden to carry out shooting with prices suspended. The first state shooting took place in 1550 at the Gräfibiel in Visp. The organization was incumbent on a rifle guild that was incorporated into the citizenry.
In 1664 the Schützenlaube, which still exists today, was built by the citizens of the Gräfibiel. Shot was shot through the western arched window. The goals were on the opposite slope, at the foot of the key laugher. In the same year the Visp rifle guild issued its own statutes. In 1865 the rifle guild, and with it the Schützenlaube, was released into independence. The shooting ranges have since changed their location several times. The Visp rifle guild still exists; the old statutes still apply.
Location and structure
The Schützenlaube is located at the foot of the Gräfibiel, the northernmost hill in the old town, on a large rock ridge.
The building faces east-west. The building consists of 2 floors. The lower is surrounded by wide arched windows; 5 adorned in the south, 2 in the west. The upper floor houses the Zunft- Stube and is lit by comparatively small windows. While the main entrance to the lower floor is in the form of a large gate on the east side, a small garden and a staircase lead from the south to the living room on the upper floor.
The stone table of the former riflemen is still on the ground floor.
today
The Schützenlaube gallery has been located on the ground floor since 1980 . The Oberwallis Art Association regularly organizes exhibitions by local, regional and international artists.
The room of the rifle guild is still on the upper floor.
