Shaft (unit)

The shaft was a volume measure in the Jever rule . The measure was intended for earth (excavated soil or puttwork) and was important when building dikes . For the pu (ü) ttmaster, the measure was the basis for remuneration. Schacht and Pütt differed only in terms of their depth, the latter measuring 4 feet.

  • 1 shaft = 20 feet by 20 feet by 1 foot
  • 4 shaft = 1 pütt = 1600 cubic feet (= 0.024 cubic meters) = 38.4 cubic meters
