Sheafīʿa Yazdi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shafīʿa Yazdi (d. 1670 ) was as Dānishmand Khān a high-ranking commander in the military and a minister in the administration of the Mughal Empire .

Life

Schafīʿa Yazdi came from Yazd in Persia (hence the nickname) and received his education there. He later went to the Mongul Empire and initially stayed in Ahmednagar , where he worked as a trader. He later entered the army service under Shah Jahan , where he held higher ranks. He received the title 'Dānishmand Khān' (dānishmand = scholar, sage ) in 1654/55 as the ruler's appreciation for his extraordinary intellectual abilities. Subsequently he held an office as minister (Mīr Bakshī) in the central administration under the rule of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb .

The knowledge of the work of Shafīʿa Yazdi is due to a number of letters from François Bernier , who also emphasized his erudition and great interest in Western science. The Italian traveler and adventurer Niccolò Manucci also confirmed Bernier's view of Yazdi.
