Schewes Achim

Schewes Achim (Brüdereintracht) was a synagogue on Gluckstrasse in Hamburg-Barmbek , which existed from 1920 to 1938.

history

In the village of Barmbeck , which had grown into a district since the middle of the 19th century , only 83 people of Jewish faith lived around 1880. With the construction of extensive workers' settlements in the following decades, the Jewish community also expanded many times over. The closest place of prayer was the Wandsbeker Synagogue in the Königszeile 43 (then Langereihe). After the outbreak of the cholera epidemic in 1892 , they were denied access there. The believers improvised and met for devotion in apartments, for larger gatherings they used Barmbeker establishments such as Von Essens-Garten (later Victoria Garten ) on Hamburger Strasse or the Schützenhof .

In 1920 the community, which had grown to more than 500 members, founded the Jewish Community Association Barmbeck, Uhlenhorst and the surrounding area , which was regarded as a Jewish learning association and advocated the establishment of its own synagogue. For this purpose, the German-Israelite Synagogue Association acquired the property at Gluckstrasse 7-9 with two adjacent villas from the Barmbeck brewery. These were converted according to plans by the architect Semmy Engel and combined into one building. On September 9, 1920 it was inaugurated under the name Schewes Achim as the third synagogue of the association (after the main synagogue on Bornplatz and the Kohlhöfen synagogue). In the prayer room at the back of the house there was space for 74 men, the adjoining women's room had 48 places. The above rabbi was Salomon Löwy, he was considered an influential teacher and important mediator of Jewish knowledge. Traditional church services were held in the synagogue, but also religious lectures, religious instruction was given and a kindergarten was set up in the early 1930s.

In November 1938 the synagogue was not destroyed or desecrated during the pogroms , but it was ordered to close immediately. In 1939 the municipality had to sell the property well below its value. In 1943 it was destroyed by bombs.

Commemoration

Memorial plaque in the sidewalk at Gluckstrasse 7–9

After the war, a new building was built on the property. In 1990 a bronze plaque was set into the sidewalk. The text says:

See how beautiful and lovely it is when brothers live together in harmony. (Psalm 133,1)
The synagogue "Schewes Achim" (brotherly union) has been located here since 1920. It was the center of Jewish culture in Barmbek. In 1939 it had to be sold to Aryan entrepreneurs under National Socialist rule. The building was destroyed in 1943.
In November 1988, various groups, communities and individuals commemorated the victims of National Socialist persecution here.
In memory of the living Jewish culture in our city, as an accusation against the injustice that was committed against fellow men of the Jewish faith during the Nazi era, as a reminder to be fraternal.
