Summary

The protagonists Thorn and Clawly are leading scientists and secret service agents in their world who jointly oversee a project. In the course of this activity, they encounter the existence of two parallel realities . The more real reality is that in which Thorn and Clawly live in a liberal society. Here they are well-known personalities. The second reality is where Thorn and Clawly live in a fascist regime. They know each other in this reality too, but for different reasons. The third reality is a destroyed world. Thorn exists in this world too.

In the course of the story, the personality structures from the other realities gain more and more influence on their alternative egos . Specifically, the secret service agent Clawly from the second reality is changed more and more recognizable by the motivations of his ego from the first reality. Subjectively, the reality of the actual protagonist Thorn changes more and more to the third reality. As history turns out, the three realities were created by the English during the 19th century by experimenting with the probability machine. Using this apparatus, parallel realities can be created. This is done by reporting from the future of a reality into the past, whereby this past is in a position to prevent this future from which the report originates, or to change it. This machine was not originally built by these English people in the 19th century, but only found and used.

Towards the end of the story, beings from another world come forward who claim to be the original creators of the machine and claim it back.
