In the military, a shooting notebook is a notebook or book in which the ammunition issued and returned as well as the shooting results are entered - the accounts of the ammunition issuer, so to speak. The individual results are also entered in a personal shooting book of the shooter (soldier).

There are two types of shooting books: the standard shooting book is i. d. R. Combat shooting registered, in the normal shooting book school shooting including scoring to obtain the shooting line and filing of the achievements for the badge for achievements in the troop service, the so-called achievement badge .

At the end of the shooting, the used ammunition is calculated on the basis of the shooting book and compared with the remaining ammunition. Differences must be reported. The shooting notebook is to be qualified as a document in the legal sense, so incorrect entries fall under the document offenses of the StGB and are therefore punishable under criminal law.

In civilian shooting sports , as well as in the armed forces, both the whereabouts of the ammunition and the marksman hits are recorded in the shooting log.
