Various types of operating tools (in Germany from DIN 3223) that are suitable for opening, closing and operating slides and shut-off valves are referred to as slide keys . If they are specially designed to operate hydrants , they are also called hydrant keys .

One differentiates

  • the tools for putting into operation above or above ground hydrants (in Germany: keys A and B according to DIN), called above or above ground hydrant keys .
In the case of pillar hydrants without a drop jacket, a large inner triangle is used to loosen the A or B blind cover on the Storz couplings of the extraction nozzle . At the other end of the key there is an arch with a bolt that can snap into the head part of the hydrant, thus enabling the hydrant to be opened or closed.
In the case of the post hydrant with a drop jacket, an inner triangle located in the middle of the key is used to operate the triangle located in the hydrant head, whereby the drop jacket is released and slides down. The large triangle is also used to loosen the A blind cover.

and

  • the tool for operating underground hydrants as well as gate valves and shut-off devices on pipes mostly laid underground, for example in the water distribution system (in Germany key C according to DIN), gate valve , underground hydrant or colloquially also called standpipe key .
The key resembles a large T. At the lower end (A) there is an inner square that can be placed on a corresponding socket (outer square) on the slide spindle. At a short end (B) of the T, a tip is forged at an angle, with the help of which the road caps, which are installed above the slides, can be opened.

In Austria these keys are colloquially also called “Salbach key”, as they are used to open and close the Salbach lock from street water.
