Shield money
A tax at the time of Norman rule in England was referred to as Schildgeld (ancient “Schiltgeld”, Latin scutagium, English scutage, French escuage, écouage). With the shield money, the vassals who were compulsory for military service could buy their way out of compulsory military service for individual campaigns. The shield money was raised by the king, the liege lord , to finance military troops. So the shield money was a kind of military tax .
