The Pico de Aneto is with a height of 3404 meters the highest mountain in the Pyrenees , the third highest in Spain (after the Teide on Tenerife and the Mulhacén in Andalusia ) and the highest of Aragon. It is located in the Spanish province of Huesca , in the north of Aragon . It forms the southern part of the Maladeta massif . Its outdated French name is Néthou .

Ascent

The starting point of the normal route for climbing the Aneto is the Refugio de la Renclusa (2140 m). From there the path leads above the Portillón Superior over to the glacier ( crampons and ice ax required) and reaches the summit via the northern flank (ascent time approx. 5-6 hours). Just before the summit is a short rocky passage, the Bridge of Mohammed . It is a narrow passage on the ridge over large boulders that is exposed on either side. From the summit the view opens to the north to the snow-capped Maladeta , to the south to the dry plateaus of Aragón .

First ascent

On July 18, 1842 , the former Russian officer Platon de Tchihatcheff ( Чихачёв, Tschichatschow ), who was staying in Bagnères-de-Luchon , left with his guides Pierre Sanio de Luz and the Luchon emperors Bernard Arrazau and Pierre Redonnet and the botanist Albert de Franqueville with his Jean Sors guide the French town of Bagnères-de-Luchon. From the Hospice de France they hiked over the Port de Vénasque (2450 m) to the Maladeta massif, where they bivouacked at the simple shelter of Renclusa . The Refugio de la Renclusa (2140 m), which was greatly expanded and modernized between 1998 and 1999, is located at this point.

The following day they crossed the Col de Alba and descended to the Ibón de Cregüeña (2660 m), where they lost their way when walking south of the lake. Towards evening, after crossing another pass, they found quarters in a cabane (shepherd's hut) in the valley of Valhibierna.

At sunrise the next day the group climbed to the Collado de Coronas (3196 m). Despite their fear of crevasses , they decided to climb over the Aneto Glacier. After the ascent over the narrow ridge shortly before the summit on a short stretch had again given them (Albert de Franqueville christened this place the Bridge of Mohammed ), they reached the highest peak of the Pyrenees on the morning of July 20, 1842. There they left a bottle with their name on it.

First winter ascent

The first ascent of Aneto in winter took place on March 1, 1878 by Roger de Monts, B. Courrèges, and B. and V. Paget.
