Shield cloud

The shield cloud - the brightest part of the Milky Way to the southwest of the Eagle constellation

The shield cloud , sometimes also called the scutum cloud , is a particularly bright spot in the band of the summer Milky Way . It is called Schild after the small constellation and can only be broken down into its individual stars through a telescope.

The star cloud can also be seen well in the summer sky from Central Europe. It is located a little south of the celestial equator between the constellations eagle, sagittarius and serpent bearer on the edge of the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way. It has an approximately circular outline, a diameter of about 5 degrees and contains Messier 11 (wild duck cluster , M11), one of the star-richest, open star clusters in the sky. The southern edge is formed by M 26 , another bright star cluster.

Further south are the neighboring constellation Sagittarius , the small and the large Sagittariuswolke representing the absolutely brightest parts of the Milky Way band in the direction of the galactic center.
