history

Schiller monument in Koenigsberg. Postcard around 1910

The bronze Schiller monument is the work of Stanislaus Cauer . A dock worker is said to have modeled Cauer for the memorial. It was inaugurated in 1910 on Paradeplatz in front of the city theater in what was then Königsberg . In 1936, despite some protests, it was set up in front of the New Playhouse . It is said to have been spared in the Battle of Koenigsberg because an unknown Red Army soldier hung a sign around the statue's neck with the Russian inscription: "Don't shoot, it's a poet." After the Second World War , the name was added to the German inscription in Cyrillic notation, as well as the dates of life on the base. The monument still stands in its place in Kaliningrad on Prospekt Mira ( Russian Проспект мира - Avenue of Peace).
