Battle of Verona

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Verona was in the summer of 402 between troops of the Western Roman Empire and the Visigoths under Alaric I take.

After the battle of Pollentia in the spring of the same year, which meant a tactical success for the Roman troops under Stilicho , Alaric had to retreat to the east again. In the summer of 402 his troops were so reorganized that he dared to push again, but this time the Romans were better prepared. The scene of the battle was the area around Verona on the Adige . It ended with a clear victory Stilichos, but again, as already after the Battle of Pollentia, he renounced to finally destroy the defeated Visigoths. The Visigoths were initially driven back from Italy, but in 408 Stilicho, who was of Germanic descent, was murdered , presumably on the orders of Emperor Honorius . Since the western Roman army was now without a general who would have been equal to Alaric, he again invaded Italy and crowned his campaign in 410 with the sack of Rome .
