The Battle of Fallujah was what the Iraqi government referred to as Operation Breaking Terrorism . The aim of the battle was to free the city of Fallujah from the terrorist organization Islamic State . The operation began on May 22, 2016 and ended successfully for the Iraqi government on June 28, 2016. The battle was part of the uprising in Iraq .

Iraqi special forces were the first to penetrate Fallujah and fought heavy fighting with 500 to 1,000 IS fighters. Booby traps were also hidden all over the city .
On May 22nd, the Iraqi government ordered civilians to leave the city when there were over 100,000 civilians in the city. To enable them to escape, escape corridors were built.
On May 23, Iraqi special forces liberated 16 villages and neighborhoods in the east of the city.
On May 30, Iraqi forces began entering the city center. By May 31, 3,000 civilians had escaped Fallujah.
On June 10, the Iraqi forces had penetrated the center and were able to take it ten days later. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi has already declared Fallujah to be taken.
On June 26, the Iraqi troops were able to take the last contested district of al-Joulan .
On June 29, the US Air Force attacked a convoy of IS fighters trying to flee the city. Around 250 IS fighters were killed.
Humanitarian Aspects
During the battle, IS used human shields, some of which consisted of entire families. There was a shortage of supplies in the improvised refugee homes. There was a lack of medicine, water and food.
The online portal Middle East Eye stated that Shiite militias abducted, tortured and shot over 300 Sunnis.
