Battle of Cepeda (1820)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Cepeda of 1820 took place on February 1, 1820 in Cañada de Cepeda , Santa Fe , Argentina .

The battle was the first major battle between the Unitarians and the Federalists as opponents. The provinces of Santa Fe and Entre Ríos , which belonged to the Liga Federal (League of Federalists), joined forces to abolish the centralized constitution of 1819 and with it the government of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata , which was the Director Supremo de the Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata board. At the time of the battle, José Rondeau was the director. Both provincial leaders, Estanislao López and Francisco Ramírez , were allies of José Gervasio Artigas from the Provincia Oriental (today Uruguay ), although he himself, as the founder of the Federal League, could not participate, but had to fight with the Brazilian occupation from 1815.

The overwhelming victory of the federalists led to the end of central power, established with the constitution of 1819 in the form of the “Supreme Directorate”, and laid the foundation for a new federal organization in Argentina with the Treaty of Pilar .

Consequences

Some of the concessions made to the Province of Buenos Aires were unsustainable for Artigas, who saw himself as the protector of the Federal League and asked López and Ramírez to change these passages. However, both opposed their former ally. Ramírez defeated the people of Artigas in a battle, after which Artigas went into exile in Paraguay .

Ramírez then seized the chance to become the hegemonic leader and on September 29, 1820 proclaimed the Republic of Entre Ríos . However, the experiment did not survive Ramírez's death. On July 10, 1821, he was murdered by soldiers of his former partner Estanislao López, who this time fought on the side of the provinces of Buenos Aires and Corrientes .
