Dungu Castle is a castle in Ober-Uelle in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

history

Dungu Castle is located in the city of Dungu at the confluence of the Kibali and the Dungu zum Uelle . It was built in 1942 by the then Belgian colonial territorial administrator of Dungu , Schollaert, as a residential and administrative center. The facility is designed in an American-style medieval style. According to reports, the 40-room castle was built from public funds that were earmarked for a bridge at this point. Since Schollaert built the bridge over the Kibali in addition to the castle, he was only transferred and not dismissed for embezzling public funds.

The castle has not been maintained since the Congo gained independence and is slowly falling into disrepair. A renovation and conversion into a hotel was already suggested in Mobutu's time, but has not been implemented to this day. At that time, the possibilities for guest accommodation in Garamba National Park, around 75 km away, and a neighboring hunting area were no longer sufficient.
