Parchwitz Castle

Parchwitz Castle ( Polish: Zamek w Prochowicach ) is a castle in the Polish Lower Silesian town of Prochowice .

history

The place, located at a ford over the Katzbach on the road from Breslau to Glogau , goes back to a foundation of the Liegnitz paladin Iko Mironowic in 1259. From around 1400 the place was owned by the von Zedlitz family. According to family tradition, Otto von Zedlitz had the previous wooden moated castle replaced by a stone building, which, together with the tower and the northern wing of the building, forms the core of the current complex. From the 1540s the castle was expanded into a palace. From 1562 Field Marshal Hans von Oppersdorff and Fabian Schönaich were owners. This had the east wing and the south gate expanded. After 1594 Parchwitz was the secondary residence of the Liegnitz dukes.

The castle was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War in 1642 and restored from 1658 under Duchess Anna Sophia von Liegnitz. After the line of the dukes had expired, the castle fell to the emperor in 1675 and became the seat of a sovereign domain. After 1820 the castle was again in private hands. Count Erdmann Sylvius von Pückler had a landscape park laid out in 1835 . In the possession of Count Kurt von Strachwitz, the castle was renovated from 1905.

At the end of the Second World War, the castle was damaged and later rebuilt. From 1990 the castle was privately owned and fell into disrepair. After a change of ownership, the castle was restored seriously.

Building

The complex consists of three parallel parts of the building that were connected to one another by the fragmented east wing. A gatehouse forms the southern main entrance and bears the inscription "Gerr Fabian von Schönach Ritter 1581". Above is a terrace with representations of mythical creatures. The tower comes from the Gothic building stock from 1422. The adjoining middle part of the building dates from the 16th century. A portal flanked with Atlant and caryatids leads into the inner courtyard of the Gothic castle . The north wing comes from the oldest building stock.
