Snogeholm Castle

The Snogeholm Castle ( Swedish Snogeholms slott ) in the southern Swedish municipality ( kommun ) Sjöbo in Skåne was in the 1870s in the French rococo style built. The castle is located directly on Snogeholmssjön and consists of a two-story main building, three three-story towers and two free-standing single-story wings. Today the castle includes a hotel and a restaurant.

history

In the place where the castle stands today, there has been a farm with a one-story house since the 16th century. It was inhabited by various noble families, u. a. Brahe , Marsvin , Thott and Bille . Christian Bille created a new main building with two free-standing wings around 1690. In 1714 Catharina Bille inherited the building. In 1746 it passed to Carl Johan von Löwen. In 1795 it was sold to Count Carl Gustaf Piper.

The castle in its current form was built by Erik Claes Piper in the 1870s. Kaiser Wilhelm II visited the castle in 1899 and 1902 to hunt deer. In 1915 it was sold to the Danish Hovjägmästare Harry Treschow and in 1917 to the Danish farmer O. Olsen. From 1933 to 1969 the castle was owned by Franklin Hansen and his family. The castle has been a hotel and restaurant since the late 1940s. After the land was bought by the province of Malmöhus , the area was made the Snogeholm hiking area ( Swedish Snogeholm strövområde ). The castle was bought in 1989 by Fred and Eva von Heideken Kristiansen, who in turn sold it.
