The castle stands where a medieval moated castle was. The castle was first mentioned in 1265 and was built by the knights of Stadl , who in turn were servants of the Wildoner and Stubenberger . After the Stadl family reached the zenith of their power in the 16th and 17th centuries, they died out in the male line in 1882.

It was expanded into a mansion from 1540, and the castle took on its present form from 1580 under Hans and Christof von Stadl. After inheritance disputes within the family and tax arrears, the castle was seized and transferred to Gotthard Zollner, the only Catholic heir. The dispute flared up again, and this was followed by forced administration and the ruin of the facility. In the 17th century the barn came back into possession of the lordship and the castle. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the owners often changed (including the Stadl again) until Stadl Castle was converted into the mining site of the Styrian State Archives in the Second World War . The stocks were greatly reduced by Soviet soldiers. Stadl Castle, meanwhile in a desolate condition, came into the possession of the Bohemian Count Kinsky family in 1966 , who have managed and inhabited the estate to the present day. Extensive renovation and modernization of the entire building was carried out by 1972.
