The Castle Museum is a museum in Darmstadt , which mainly shows objects from the property of the former Landgraves and Grand Dukes of Hessen-Darmstadt .

The museum is located in the bell and church building of the Darmstadt Residenzschloss in downtown Darmstadt across from the market square.

The museum shows a variety of historical objects, paintings, pictures and documents on the history of the House of Hesse , the State of Hesse and Darmstadt. Thematic areas in the museum are: Landgraviate of Hesse , From Napoleon to the Grand Duchy and Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt . In the foreground of the exhibition rooms, which are furnished according to epochs, however, is the princely lifestyle from the 17th to the early 20th century. The Darmstadt Madonna was also on display until 2003 and was sold to a private collector in 2011.

The museum was supported by an association , which in turn was sponsored by the Hessian House Foundation , the State of Hesse and the City of Darmstadt. After the city of Darmstadt left this association, it was in dissolution at the beginning of 2009. In July 2010 a concept was presented that represented the future exhibition work. The renovation of the castle museum has been in progress since late autumn 2013. At the end of 2014 only a limited exhibition space was available.
