The Freedom Square (Polish: Plac Wolności ) is located in the old town of Wroclaw . The square used to be called Schlossplatz ( Plac Zamkowy in Polish ) after the most famous building .

history

Immediately in front of the city fortifications there was a parade ground for the Prussian military. The Prussian King Friedrich II had his city palace expanded on this area; the building was named after the square. After the defeat of the Prussian troops, Napoleon Bonaparte had the city wall torn down in 1807 and a green promenade was set up in its place.

The square was now used for parades and exercises. In the years 1843–1846, the city palace was expanded again according to plans by Friedrich August Stüler . The king could thus watch the military parades and demonstrations from his bedroom and office.

During the Third Reich , the Nazis also used the square for their own purposes. After the end of the war , in the 1950s, the now exclusively Polish city administration gave the square the new name Freedom Square. The appearance of the square changed because the damaged Stülersche wing was removed from the city palace and numerous other buildings in the area were destroyed and also had to disappear. The square was used as a marketplace, but presented itself as an urban wasteland .

After the end of the Cold War , a skate park with ramps was set up. However, a fatal accident in 2005 led to its closure as a sports field.

From 2007, archaeological excavations were carried out on the square in preparation for a new building. The National Forum for Music ( Narodowe Forum Muzyki ) was created, which includes a concert hall for 1,800 people, three further concert halls, conference rooms, offices, a library and exhibition rooms. In 2015 the modern building was ready for use. Various festivals take place here over the course of the year, such as Wratislavia Cantans , Musica Polonia Nova or Singing Europe .
