The Schlossplatz Varel is a historic square and was built on with the Varel Castle from 1556 until the 19th century . Today it is mainly used for public events.

History and Development

Until 1816, the square was the location of the Varel Castle . After it burned down, only the east wing and the riding arena remained. In 1871, the Germaniadenkmal, sponsored by the citizens, was erected here to commemorate the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. In 1972 it was transferred to the district court .

In 1876 a new, larger market place was requested. The palace square seemed well suited for this. The east wing of the palace had to be removed. However, this would have meant that the Varel Supreme Court would have lost premises, which, however, were needed. Since a new construction of the upper court was not yet planned, it was decided, according to the proposal of the building councilor Lasius, to demolish the entire castle. Adjacent properties were sold and developed. Diedrich Klävemann, the city director at the time, had a major influence on the design and development of the Schlossplatz.

The "rubber station", a bus station, at the place of the climbing frame, had to give way. Schlossplatz has existed in its current form since 1969. Adjacent buildings include the Varel District Court and the Castle Church .

layout

The Schlossplatz is an almost completely preserved example of the Wilhelminian style, historicizing architecture. Originally with 14 linden trees and 14 sandstone columns, the square was well decorated at that time. Not all of the linden trees were preserved. A couple of pillars moved in front of the local museum on Neumarkt and the windmill .
