In cave exploration, a chimney is a more or less vertical passage that continues upwards.

A chimney can also be a shaft at the same time . The definition of the terms is vague and depends largely on the direction from which the passage is being researched: if the research is mainly from the upper part of the passage, it is called a shaft.

Emergence

A chimney can develop due to various factors. Chimneys that are created by leaching processes often end blindly, that is, they keep narrowing further or more at the upper end and can not be closed .
