Snap lock (lock)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A snap lock (also a latch lock ) belongs to the category of mortise locks . A characteristic of the snap lock is the so-called “snapper” (lock latch ) , which replaces the bolt in the latch lock .

When closed, it is the latch that blocks the door.

construction

A normal snap lock consists of the catch with latch lock , latch spring and change . There is also a built-in noise suppressor in special designs. This device muffles the sound of the snap when the door is opened and closed .

function

During the closing process, the catch engages in the latch provided in the door opener. The snap lock is usually opened by a mechanical snap. This can be done by operating a small lever or by a slight pulling movement. For security reasons, most doors with a snap lock also have an additional mortise bolt . This can be locked overnight, for example. This is also relevant in terms of insurance law, since a simple trap protection alone does not count as a locked door lock .

use

Snap locks are often used in single-family houses or apartment buildings. Because a door with a snap lock makes it easier for many people to come and go. Because actuating the catch replaces unlocking when the doors are very busy. In the case of a single-family house, this also prevents the risk of being locked out.

Latch locks are also mostly found in attic hatches. There is a special mechanism here that unlocks the snap lock. By pulling downwards, the catch retracts from an annular locking device.

Snap locks are suitable for the easy and safe locking of flaps and heavily frequented doors. There are models with electrical or mechanical door openers.

Processing / finishes

A snap lock can be installed in the form of mortise locks on wooden doors, as well as in tubular frame locks in metal doors. Other versions of the latch lock can be found in screw-on locks, furniture locks or in rear-bolt locks.
