A cutting machine is a mechanically or electrically driven device for cutting food such as bread, sausage, cheese, vegetables, etc. or cutting and separating materials such as paper, sheet metal, etc. by means of different cutters.

In the case of a slicer , the cutting is done by means of a rotating circular knife, which is fixed on one side. The food to be cut is moved. Sometimes these devices are also referred to as all-purpose slicers or universal slicers .

Bread slicers are available in different designs. In industrial machines, the blades are usually guided through the bread. In machines for domestic use, the bread can be cut by moving it along a mechanically or electrically rotating circular knife or by pushing a blade through the bread.

Willy Abel from Berlin invented the first bread slicer .

Metal sheets, plastic sheets or cardboard boxes are cut with guillotine shears . The material to be cut is guided by a fixed and a moving blade.

Leafy materials are cut using a plan cutter. The cutting is done by a moving knife.

Used for cutting very thin layers Microtomes .
