A cutting box , often a miter cutting box , more rarely a miter box , is an aid for making miter cuts, mostly in wood , e.g. B. for baseboards or picture frames. It is made of wood, plastic or metal and has a U-shape. There are guide slots in the side parts for cutting exact 45 ° and 90 ° angles with a hand saw .

Technically more complex cutting shutters can be adjusted to different angles and are not only available for hand saws, but also for electric jigsaws , among other things .

Chopping chests used to be made from simple pieces of wood and used until the guides were worn out. To protect the wood and to extend the service life, the guides were partially protected with metal fittings.
