The chimney (Alliance Gaswork) is a monument of Dublin Docklands.

location

The dark red brick chimney on Hibernian Road (RPS Addition List No. 21 since May 13, 2013) is an artifact that reminds of the earlier use of the area. The Irish gas supply company Gas Alliance was based there. Gas supply meant the conversion of coal into gas .

history

In 1820, the first Dublin gas company, the Gas Light Company, was established through a parliamentary resolution. From then on the streets of Dublin were brightly lit.

There were also environmental regulations back then, so it was forbidden to discharge sewage into the Liffey . In 1866 four gas suppliers joined together to form the Gas Alliance and thus held the monopoly over private and public electricity in Dublin and the surrounding area from 1889 on. The Grand Canal Dock, where the historic chimney is located, was the shipyard area for the gas suppliers. From Liverpool and during the 1930 Economic War, coal was shipped to the Grand Canal Dock and processed there to provide electricity to Dubliners. The supply of gas was seen early on as an exclusive luxury good in the middle class.

But with the discovery of natural oil in the North Sea at the latest, the gas market in Ireland collapsed. In 1983 a gas pipeline was completed, natural oil found its way into Dublin households and the gas giants went bankrupt. The areas of the former gas supply such as the Grand Canal Dock with the historic chimney were transferred to the ownership of Board Gáis Energy.

Revitalization

In 1997 the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) acquired the area from Board Gáis Energy for 17 million euros and invested another 50 million euros in the run-down area. In addition to the chimney, the theater designed by Daniel Libeskind called the Board Gáis Theater is a reminder of the gas company.

The chimney was adapted to its modern environment, as an element of a playground it acts as a basketball hoop attachment and climbing wall.
