When shredded or hog fuel is called wood (wood shredder) and other biomass by an impact comminution ( shredding ) was crushed instead of cutting tools (hoes, saws). The material is not split, but broken and smashed. Shredded wood provides its own from the wood chips under different fuel grade is to be classified on the standard CEN / TS 14961 for solid fuels and described.

Compared to wood chips, shredded material has a particularly rough surface due to the shredding and splintering of the raw material and the associated unfavorable bulk material properties. The surface also promotes rapid biological degradation, as fungi and bacteria can settle well at the cracks. Shredded material is mainly used for processing bark mulch and compost substrates.
