Writing ring
A writing ring is a plastic ring with a diameter of about 11 cm which prevents the tape from being accidentally overwritten on magnetic tapes (half-inch tapes , bank cassettes, data processing).
use
The tape can only be written to on the tape recorder if the writing ring is inserted into the reel of the tape. The writing ring is located on the back of the spool, which is why the tape must be unloaded from the tape device to insert / remove the writing ring. According to the description in the patent application, "when the write ring [...] is removed, the data stored on the magnetic tape are effectively secured against deletion, overwriting , effects in the event of a power failure and switching on and off of the device power supply as a result of a device error or manual intervention during operation" .
