Schwarzfahren is a slang term for the following issues:
- Use of public transport without a valid ticket, see Creeping , and
- Driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving license, see Driving without a driving license
The term is possibly a derivative of the term “blacken”, which was first used to describe smuggling and later all kinds of illegal activities . According to various sources, the term black comes either from the fact that such activities were mostly carried out at night or from the habit of smugglers to blacken their faces in order to make themselves unrecognizable. Another derivation leads the term back to the Yiddish word “shvarts”, which can also mean “poverty”. Accordingly, fare dodgers are those who cannot afford a ticket.
