The Schweizerhaus is an excursion restaurant just south of Rheinstein Castle in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley . It is located on a rock plateau about 130 m above the banks of the Rhine and can only be reached on foot. From the location you have a clear view of Assmannshausen on the other bank and up the Rhine to Binger Loch .

The Schweizerhaus has been part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 .

The forest restaurant has been closed since the owner's death. From May 2018, his son will now run a beer garden with a view ; a restaurant operation should only be possible again after years.

history

Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig of Prussia had the house built from 1842 to 1844 on the land of the former Faitsberger (Fatzberger) Hof, which supplied Rheinstein Castle from around the 14th century, by Swiss workers using wooden blocks. The prince had owned Rheinstein Castle since 1823 and built a guest and excursion house here. The house and castle are connected by a serpentine path with romantic turrets at the viewpoints. As with the castle itself, a vineyard was also laid out here. Its terraces are now wooded. In addition to the rural idyll, the prince also had a tournament area laid out. The name and architectural style of the house were contemporary for the Rhine romanticism of that time . In addition to the Middle Rhine Valley, the Swiss mountains were another “ideal landscape” of Romanticism .
