Swimming style
The swimming style is the individual execution of a swimming type or swimming technique that is characteristic of the individual swimmer .
Swimming style versus swimming technique
The terms "swimming style" or "swimming technique" are to be distinguished from the term "swimming style". In swimming sports, swimming types are techniques such as breaststroke , crawl swimming , back crawling or butterfly swimming . Older and less common swimming techniques are side swimming and old German back . The most original form of swimming is dog swimming , paddling with all four limbs below the trunk lying flat . Many land mammals swim in this way.
The term style , on the other hand, characterizes the individual implementation of these standardized swimming types. He hangs z. B. on the anatomical features or the preferences of the individual swimmer. Breaststroke swimming, for example, can be done with long or short gliding phases, crawling with a different arm stroke technique, a personally preferred breathing rhythm or with a specific hand position. The swimming technique is precisely defined and specified for the competition. The individual swimming style is optional.
The distinction between style and technique is of fundamental importance, especially in competitive sports: Deviations from the prescribed swimming technique lead to the disqualification of the swimmer concerned, while the personal swimming style within the framework of the rules has no effect on the assessment. The referee makes the distinction with an informed judgment.
