The swing arm is part of the external gate control of a steam locomotive, the most famous of which is the Heusinger control .

Application and purpose

The swing arm transfers the movement of the drive axle to the swing arm of the Heusinger control via the counter crank . You can see the attachment on the counter crank and the attachment of the swing arm in the photo. The rocker arm is not forked at the connection to the counter crank, at the connection to the rocker arm. In this form it can be clearly identified, as it is the longest of the control rods in this form. It is lubricated at both ends.

On the sketch you can see that when the steam locomotive moves, a constant oscillating movement is transmitted by the movement of the counter crank, which is not influenced by the position of the control rod and thus the control wheel in the driver's cab. The swing arm transfers the rotary movement of the counter crank to the swing arm in a translational movement .
