The subcaudalia (syn. Subcaudals ; singular subcaudale , actually Scutum subcaudale ) are the enlarged horn scales on the underside of the tail of most snakes . They can be arranged in pairs or in a row. The subcaudalia connect to the anal (anal shield) in the area of the cloaca , in front of which are the ventralia or abdominal scales.

As with all other scales, their shape, size and training are important determinants within the snake system .
