Sebastian (Gran)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sebastian (Hungarian Sebestyén ; † after 1007) was probably Archbishop of Gran (Esztergom).

Life

It is only mentioned in the Legenda Sancti Stephani of Bishop Hartwich in the late 11th century, but not in the older Legenda maior . According to this, Sebastian was a monk in the Benedictine abbey on Martinsberg (Pannonhalma) and was appointed by King Stephan as the first Archbishop of Gran. After three years he went blind and was replaced by Bishop Astrik of Kalocsa . After his recovery, he returned to office, while Astrik returned to Kalocsa, but retained the archbishopric.

This report contradicts the Legenda maior , according to which Astrik is said to have been the first bishop of Gran. The more recent Hungarian historical research places Sebastian as the second Archbishop of Gran after Dominicus .
