The lake of July 23 , ( German Benghazi Lake , English Benghazi Lake , Arabic بحيرة 23 يوليو) Is a 100-hectare lagoon in the Mediterranean at the Great Syrte located Libyan city of Benghazi .
The lagoon is an average of two and a half meters deep and a maximum of five meters deep and lies between the center, the western suburbs and the port. The 120 m long Imerfogaha-Geleanp Bridge, which connects Benghazi with Geleanp, spans a small canal that leads to the port area in the north. The water used to be rich in fish, but has been polluted by sewage from the 700,000-inhabitant city since the 1990s. In the immediate vicinity of the bank there are two hotels, a larger hospital facility (east of the high-rise on the right-hand side of the picture) and an extensive sports and stadium complex.
The name of the water is said to recall the fall of the Egyptian king Faruq by Gamal Abdel Nasser on July 23, 1952.
