from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sea monkey is a lithostratigraphic guiding horizon in the St. Gallen Upper Sea Molasse in the Swiss Alpine foothills. The type locality is a compact, marine sandstone with cockles , oysters and shark teeth . The sea monkey is dated to the chronostratigraphic stage of the Burdigalium of the Middle Miocene (early Neogene , " Tertiary "). The horizon is divided into the lower and upper sea monkeys. The two sub-horizons differ slightly in the rock composition.
