Secretariat for the Antarctic Treaty

Antarctic Treaty Secretariat ( Antarctic Treaty Secretariat ( ATS )) is an organization responsible for the management of multiple tasks of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings-- is responsible (ATCM Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting). For example, the support of the annual meeting of the signatory states of the Antarctic Treaty or the publication of the annual report. The organization was founded in 2003 during the XXVI ATCM in Madrid.

Other activities carried out by the Secretariat include, on the one hand, supporting the meetings of the Committee on Environmental Protection (CEP), improving communication between the signatory states to the treaty, and recompiling, storing and distributing information such as: B. the ATCM and CEP records.

The first secretary was Jan Huber from the Netherlands. He held the position for five years until August 31, 2009. He was replaced by Manfred Reinke, who was elected by the ATCM in Baltimore . Albert Lluberas Bonaba has been in office since 2017 .

As of September 1, 2004, the Secretariat had no permanent establishment. The Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty has been set up in Buenos Aires since 2004 .
