The self-defense. Independent Jewish Weekly was a Zionist German-language magazine that appeared in Prague from 1907 to late 1938 . The subtitle was changed to Jüdisches Volksblatt in 1922 .

The Jewish weekly, founded by Franz Steiner, was intended as an answer to the Jewish weekly in the Czech language Rozvoj (German = progress, development; published 1894–1932).

In terms of name and program, it was based on publications by Leo Pinsker and Nathan Birnbaum . She was close to the Zionist student association Bar Kochba , which was headed by Hugo Bergman at the time .

Alongside her, the Selbstwehr Verlag developed, whose members published the annual Jewish Almanac , among other things .

From 1913 to 1917 Siegmund Kaznelson was editor of the magazine, after a falling out it was edited by Nelly Thieberger. The most important editor of the self-defense from 1919 to 1938 was Felix Weltsch , philosopher and close friend of Max Brod and Franz Kafka , who were both authors of articles and readers of the self -defense. Kafka published z. B. 1915 Before the law . During this time, the weekly was the most important Zionist newspaper in Czechoslovakia until it was banned at the end of 1938 and the publisher had to cease all activities shortly afterwards.

In the mid-1930s, Esriel Carlebach wrote the regular column Diary of the Week .
