As selenosis ( synonym selenium-poisoning ) is referred to a disease image obtained by an increased intake of selenium is triggered. An undersupply is called selenium deficiency .
causes
Acute poisoning with selenium can occur with ingestion of 3 to 7 mg in a day. In chronic cases, its accumulation is due to long-term excessive intake (over 0.6 mg daily) e.g. B. by selenium-containing tablets, inhalation , food (over 2 µg per gram) and drinking water. For the latter, the WHO set the upper limit value at 10 µg / l.
Symptoms
Early symptoms include nausea, fatigue, muscle weakness and diarrhea. In the further course paresthesia due to peripheral neuropathy , hair loss, skin lesions, watery diarrhea and loss of the nails can occur.
therapy
It is essential to adhere to the above-mentioned limit values in food. No specific therapy is known.
