Self Service Information (abbr .: SSI) called information systems , which by the user self-service ( self service can be availed). Usually, a PC or terminal with a predetermined, limited input option for querying preset database contents is used for this purpose. Typical areas of application worldwide are job vacancies, inventory and product inquiries, public address and telephone directory inquiry terminals and traffic information terminals. With the spread of the Internet, SSI applications are increasingly being offered over the World Wide Web . In this sense, Wikipedia is also an SSI.

In Switzerland, an SSI system was developed in 1995 by the Swiss federal administration in cooperation with the cantons, employment offices and career advice centers. Using this system, information on vacancies, apprenticeships and training opportunities could be called up at over 350 locations. A comparable service was developed in Germany under the name Stellen-Informations-System (SIS) (also Stellen-Informations-Service), which was integrated into the portal of the Federal Employment Agency . The Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) offered this service both via local terminals and via the Internet. In the meantime, these systems have been replaced in all three countries by more comprehensive e-service areas, which among other things allow the search for vacancies.

In addition to the classic SSI interfaces of the PC or terminal, voice self service has also been possible since the introduction of digital telephony technology. Voice self service allows voice-controlled access to information.
