Voltinism
Voltinism ( Italian volta , time, rotation ' ) is a term from the Entomology (Entomology) and describes the number of completed annual generations of a kind .
One differentiates:
- Univoltin (single brood ) with one generation per year (occasionally also: monovoltin ),
- Bivoltin with two generations a year,
- Trivoltin with three generations a year,
- Polyvoltin or plurivoltin with always successive generations z. B. in areas without seasons, or
- Semivoltin : the completion of a generation takes longer than a year; the required period is not specified.
Some authors reserve the term semivoltin for species with a two-year development, merovoltin is also used for species with a three-year development . Occasionally, this term is used for species that have developed over a number of years regardless of the number of years, or for all cycles over two years. For several generations a year without a specification of the number ( i.e. as an umbrella term for bivoltin, trivoltin etc.), multivoltin is sometimes used.
The term is also often used in silk construction.
